Thinktank

"seeking to proclaim the Gospel and serve our local community"

Contemporary Society and Contemporary Religion

The Christ Church Thinktank has been in existence for over 10 years. It draws on speakers from all the churches in the Lewes area.  Our speakers provide their services without charge, so our meetings are free and open to all. Whether you go to church or not, join us whenever the topic interests you.

In the current situation, all our meetings are currently being held using Zoom. The format is the same – 45 minutes talk and 45 minutes discussion and our average attendance is about 30. All meetings are from 7.30 pm to 9 pm.

Next meeting on Wednesday  17 February 2021 by Zoom.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday  17 Febriuary 2021 at 7:30 pm.
The speaker will be Professor Norman Billingham who will be speaking on:

“Plastics in the World of Art ”

The last century saw the development of a range of new materials that we call polymers or plastics. Although the disposal and recycling of discarded plastics has received much attention, we have heard little about the preservation of plastic artefacts in our cultural heritage. Norman Billingham, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Sussex, will review advantages and disadvantages of the use of plastics in works of art and in wider society. He is an ardent theatre- and operagoer and celebrated retirement by gaining a BA in cultural studies.  He continues to supervise conservation students’ projects at West Dean College and to sit on a joint committee that advises Arts and Science Research Councils where their areas overlap.
